Yes, the boxing element is a vital part of the narrative, but at two+ hours, a good amount of drama unfolds, with scattered bits of comedy throughout. It’s pretty involving…director/star Jia Ling fully invests in the process for this film.

YOLO is undoubtedly inspired by the first Rocky movie, but this is no Rocky ripoff. The movie has some unexpected moments amid some predictability, along with heartfelt drama and a notable transformative performance from writer/director/star Jia Ling.

Trades in crude humour and is often so condescending towards its put-upon protagonist that any eventual uplift factor rings rather hollow.
