The Highest-Grossing Films of 2020 from Best to Worst – RT Critics

The following are 9 of the 10 highest-grossing films of 2020 so far, arranged in order from “best” to “worst” according to the collective opinions of Rotten Tomatoes film critics.  Contained is each film’s critical approval, average rating and critical consensus (if there is one).  Note that this list will probably look rather different by the end of the year.

(The film not included – Tolo Tolo – doesn’t have an RT page.)

The Invisible Man

91% – 7.72/10 (373 reviews)

Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight.

Onward

88% – 7.18/10 (314 reviews)

It may suffer in comparison to Pixar’s classics, but Onward makes effective use of the studio’s formula — and stands on its own merits as a funny, heartwarming, dazzlingly animated adventure.

Birds of Prey

Harley standing on a giant clamshell, surrounded by the other characters, in a spoof of Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus.

78% – 6.74/10 (397 reviews)

With a fresh perspective, some new friends, and loads of fast-paced action, Birds of Prey captures the colorfully anarchic spirit of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

Bad Boys for Life

77% – 6.22/10 (254 reviews)

Loaded up with action and a double helping of leading-man charisma, Bad Boys for Life reinvigorates this long-dormant franchise by playing squarely to its strengths.

Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior

70% – 6.33/10 (10 reviews)

Sonic the Hedgehog

63% – 5.8/10 (227 reviews)

Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy — and a fine excuse for Jim Carrey to tap into the manic energy that launched his career.

The Call of the Wild

61% – 5.99/10 (190 reviews)

It’s undermined by distracting and unnecessary CGI, but this heartwarming Call of the Wild remains a classic story, affectionately retold.

The Grudge

20% – 4.16/10 (120 reviews)

Dull and derivative, the rebooted Grudge wastes a talented cast and filmmaker on watered-down scares that may leave viewers nursing grievances of their own.

Dolittle

14% – 3.85/10 (223 reviews)

Dolittle may be enough to entertain very young viewers, but they deserve better than this rote adaptation’s jumbled story and stale humor.
